WHY DID YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER?

"I wanted to volunteer with Worldwide Action because I was tired of giving money to large companies and never knowing if I made a difference to real people or if I paid for the CEO’s expenses. Having met Graeme, I knew every penny donated goes to improving children’s lives. I’ve never met a more passionate and genuine person, determined to improve the lives of children around the World and inspiring others to do the same. It was an incredible opportunity to be part of that Action, actually going and doing it, not just giving money. Scary at first, having lots of paperwork to complete, all the vaccinations and flying around the world with a team of people you’ve never met but we soon become a solid team with a worthwhile goal to focus on."

WHAT ARE YOUR STRONGEST MEMORIES?

"It’s hard work and you go to bed exhausted and aching the first few nights. But your body gets used to it and you find strength you never knew you had. It centered me and helped me realise what was important, when you daily goal is to build, eat, shower and sleep. It was a welcome break from the pressures of a normal day and I miss it, even now. I am already planning how to save up for my next flight so I can go again. The simple satisfaction of doing a good job for others, it’s a glow that stays with you. And you don’t do it for any reward but I have definitely benefitted from the experience."

HOW DID THE EXPERIENCE AFFECT YOU?

"I am more calm, more confident, more emotionally centred and able to cope with unexpected stresses. I understand what really matters in life and how you only need a few very basic things to be happy, it’s all about being grateful for what you have and sharing your fortune with others. I have made some strong bonds with some incredible people and I have absolutely no regrets about putting my life on hold and into the hands of Graeme for two weeks, as it has given me a lifetime of positives. Namaste."
